Perth comedian and musician Tim Minchin is in the running for a Tony award for his work on the musical adaptation of the classic children's book Matilda.
Matilda, which opened on Broadway last month, had 12 nominations when the contenders for the theatre awards were announced last night.
Minchin was nominated his lyrics and songs. The production also gained nods for best musical, choreography, directing, orchestration, best book and best leading role in a musical for Bertie Carvel.
The Cyndi Lauper-scored Kinky Boot, based on a 2005 British movie, earned a leading 13 Tony nominations.
Matilda: The Musical is a witty musical adaptation of the novel by Roald Dahl and is true to his bleak vision of childhood as a savage battleground.
It opened in New York two weeks ago to rave reviews and is still playing in the West End in London.
Minchin grew up in Perth and got his break at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2005. He is now based in London but will be back in Perth in June to play Judas in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar.
The Tony winners will be announced on June 9.
