It was a double-edged sword for South Australian couple Stefano Guerra and Lisa Gabel on last night's My Kitchen Rules.
While the evening started with a bang when Guerra, 32, surprised Gabel, 41, with a marriage proposal in front of their competitors and judges, things quickly went downhill for the couple, who ended up with the lowest score of the competition so far - just 38 out of 110.
Gabel told AAA their instant restaurant might have gone better if perhaps Guerra had saved the proposal until after dessert, and not before they had started to plate up the entrees.
"It really impacted on how we cooked," Gabel said. "I thought, 'Do I really have to cook or can I just go home and tell my kids? Can I tell my parents? Can we have a glass of wine somewhere and celebrate?' So, things didn't go well at all. I kept thinking 'I've got a husband'."
The couple, who are planning to get married in Guerra's native Italy next year, met two years ago through mutual friends at an Adelaide restaurant but Gabel said she was not looking for love at the time - she was a single mum to Freya, 12, Ava, 10 and Fergus, eight.
"It was a chance meeting. I wasn't in any position to have a relationship, I was a single mum of three kids and really I couldn't be bothered," she said.
Gabel said she wanted to set the record straight on some rumours she had heard about their relationship, saying the impending marriage was not based around Guerra gaining Australian residency.
"There have been a few comments that people have been saying he only wants to marry me so he can get his residency in Australia," she said.
"But he had already achieved that milestone without me, so people can put that (rumour) to bed."
Stirring gatecrashers Sophia Pou and Ashlee Pham will take to the kitchen for the first time tonight at 7.30pm on Seven and GWN7, with the lowest-scoring team to be sent packing.
No matter the outcome, Gabel said Pou and Pham's mean-spirited comments about Guerra, who they have publicly labelled "dumb" and "mind-numbing", were unforgivable.
"They are a pair of extremely ignorant young women and to make assumptions about people you don't know is a really stupid thing to do," Gabel said.
