Son of a Gun is arming itself with a classy support cast, with fast-rising Aussie hunk *Brenton Thwaites *, Swedish hottie *Alicia Vikander *and veteran *Jacek Koman *recruited to star alongside *Ewan McGregor *, inset, in Julius Avery's upcoming WA-set crime thriller.
Home and Away alumni Thwaites, who recently completed Maleficent with *Angelina Jolie *, will play a protege of McGregor's master criminal in Avery's debut feature, which begins shooting in *Perth * and *Kalgoorlie * later this month.
The love interest will be played by Vikander, who was a BAFTA Rising Star nominee for the acclaimed Danish period drama A Royal Affair and will soon be seen on Perth screens in Anna Karenina, in which she plays the jilted Kitty alongside *Keira Knightley *and *Jude Law *(see Today Movies P6 for a full preview of Anna Karenina).
Koman, who plays a manipulative crime boss, is one of the best-known faces in Australian film and television, with Romulus, My Father and Moulin Rouge among his long list of credits.
Securing the always-in-demand McGregor is quite a coup for Avery, a Perth-raised, Sydney- based writer-director who made a splash in 2008 when his short film Jerrycan won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. "Julius Avery is a director that we have had our eye on for a long time," says *Troy Lum *of Hopscotch/eOne, which will be distributing Son of a Gun.
"We believe he is one of the most exciting new directors in the country. It is exciting to be involved in his first feature with such a fantastic cast."
Son of a Gun has a top-flight producer in *Timothy White *(his credits include Two Hands and The Boys Are Back) with local filmmakers *Janelle Landers *and *Aidan O'Bryan *(Wasted On The Young) among the Perth talent working to ensure that Son of a Gun fires live ammunition instead of blanks.
