REVIEW: The Annotated Brothers Grimm
REVIEW: The Annotated Brothers Grimm

This bicentennial edition of The Annotated Brothers Grimm, first published in 2004, has been edited, annotated and given a new preface by the collection's wonderful translator, Maria Tatar, professor of Germanic languages and literatures at Harvard University. Among the more than 50 stories included here are all your favourites - Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, The Frog King, Cinderella and more - rendered in the same clear, engaging English that distinguishes Tatar's translations of the stories of Hans Christian Andersen. The illustrations by George Cruikshank, Gustave Dore, Arthur Rackham and others are a treat in themselves, while the icing on the cake is A. S. Byatt's sparkling introduction. A must for any serious library.
