Some of Australia's biggest celebrities lit up the red carpet at the 2nd Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTA) in Sydney last night.

All eyes were on style queen *Cate Blanchett *who was the event's best- dressed in a form-fitting red- sequined Armani creation.

Another winner in red was *Jessica Mauboy * who glowed in a flowing gown by Sydney-based designer Steven Khalil. She changed outfits before performing and accepting her award for her role in The Sapphires.

Actress *Brooke Satchwell *also upped the fashion stakes in a Jennifer Regan gown, which was so tight that she had to be stitched into it at 11.30am.

Fresh off a flight from Los Angeles, *Nicole Kidman *shook off the jetlag to walk the red carpet in a rather dowdy pale yellow embroidered lace Erdem dress.

Kidman wanted to feel comfortable as she was rushing off to husband *Keith Urban *'s Sydney concert after the awards.

"I've had some situations where I've worn really uncomfortable dresses and one time I wore a really uncomfortable dress and had to go home early, which was such a tragedy for me because I like going out," Kidman said.

"We're here just because of Keith's tour, so I happened to be here and went, 'OK I can go to this as long as I get to the show tonight'. I'm going to be rushing. I want to be able to see the opening of the show tonight."

Kidman said the awards' host, *Russell Crowe, * was on the same flight to Sydney and helped out with her two children.

"He carried *Faith Margaret *out for me because my arms were so tired," she said. "And I've got all the bags and the blankies."

  • Joel Edgerton *, nominated for best actor for Wish You Were Here, created a paparazzi frenzy when he arrived with his rumoured fiancee, *Al * *exis Blake *. The event marked the first official outing for the couple.

Also creating a stir were visiting actors *Gemma Arterton *and *Jeremy Renner *.

Perth stars also provided some of the red carpet highlights.

Model and TV presenter *Megan Gale *looked striking in a black dress courtesy of *Alex Perry *, while Legally Blonde the Musical actress *Lucy Durack *bizarrely arrived with her favourite accessory, dog Taxi.

Blue was also a popular red carpet choice, with standouts being Durack and Packed to the Rafters co-stars *Rebecca Gibney *, in a vintage frock, and *Jessica McNamee *in a bold and sexy Carl Kapp gown.
