High-vis designer seeks to be seen

High-vision mining gear may not seem like a source of fashion inspiration for most but, for designer *Tim Watson *, it was his love of utilitarian style that helped him score a scholarship to work in New York.

The *Curtin University *fashion design graduate beat hundreds of applicants nationwide to be awarded the Australians in New York Fashion Foundation Scholarship, which will see him travel to the Big Apple later this year to commence a six-month internship with GQ Designer of the Year *Thom Browne *.

Though he did not expect to win the opportunity, Watson told _Access All Areas _he was looking forward to the technical aspects of the program.

"It exposes you not only to the New York fashion industry but also their techniques for production, sampling and pattern- making," the 25-year-old said.

"That is really what this scholarship is about - learning those and bringing them back to Australia."

With work experience for acclaimed designer *Akira Isogawa *under his belt, Watson has seen himself evolve during his time at university to creating menswear designs with a focus on tailoring and pattern-making.

But the *Mt Lawley *-based maverick found an unlikely inspiration for his latest collection.

"I have really gotten into sportswear lately and used that as a key influence," Watson said.

"Also I found that the fly-in, fly-out, high-vis mining gear has quite interesting design lines."

Despite his international venture looming, Watson is sure that he

will eventually return to Australia as a base for future career aims. He said in addition to wanting his own menswear label in 10 years, he was hoping for an even larger venture.

"My professional ambition is to set up a company in Australia that would provide fashion consulting, pattern- making and sample machining but of a really high-end quality," Watson said.
