Q&A: Tell Mama: The Music of Etta James

Get to know some of the 300-plus acts appearing at Fringe World 2013 as they answer our frequently asked questions.

Tell Mama: The Music of Etta James

What word best describes your show?
DYNAMITE.

OK, now you've got 50 words; please elaborate on the above.
The hardest part about putting this show together was picking the tunes! Etta James had so many brilliant songs throughout her career but we've managed to showcase her hits from 1955-1968. Joining our Stratosfunk ladies on stage and making sweet love to your ears are Libby Hammer and Rusty Pinto.

Where have you performed the show?
Although Stratosfunk have been regularly performing all around Perth, Tell Mama: The Music of Etta James is debuting at FRINGE WORLD 2013. In saying that, Fringe World is the first step of what is going to be an extended journey for this show - we have plans for regional WA, interstate and international shows.

Career highlight?
Headlining the Motown On The Rocks sold-out show at The Quarry and getting to bring in 2013 with the rest of Perth at the Piazza stage in Northbridge for the countdown. But if you're an AFL fan, some would argue that our shows at the Dockers Doig Medal or West Coast Eagles Champion Awards 2011 and 2012 would be our highlights.

What does "fringe" mean to you?
One of Yara's many amazing hairstyles! Seriously though, fringe is an opportunity for artists of all mediums to take on projects that are a bit left-of-centre and know they have a willing audience who are ready to enjoy the ride of exploring new territory.

Why is your show at Fringe World a must-see?
Whether you know one Etta James song or you are a die-hard fan - or even if you have never heard of her - the quality of her music and the honesty of her lyrics will move you to laughter, tears, or if we are really lucky, interpretive dance. Also, there will be hot men and hotter women, amazing performances from a 10-piece band and to top it all off, we have the swinging Libby Hammer and the rockin' Rusty Pinto as our special guests. And what's more, Tell Mama was chosen to be performed in the West Australian Idolize Spiegletent!

THE PLUG: Tell Mama: The Music of Etta James by Stratosfunk runs Feb 20-23 at The West Australian Spiegeltent. Head to fringeworld.com.au for tickets.
