G *olden Globe *winner *Jennifer Lawrence *has been forced to clarify a joke she made about *Meryl Streep * * *during her acceptance speech at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles earlier this week.

The actress, who won best actress (film - comedy or musical) for her role in Silver Linings Playbook and is also up for an Oscar, blurted out: "I beat Meryl," when she took to the stage to accept her award.

While most of the stars in the audience had a chuckle over the remark, which referenced a line by *Bette Midler *in the 1996 comedy The First Wives Club, some failed to see the humour.

One in particular was troubled Liz & Dick star *Lindsay Lohan *, who tweeted on Monday: "No1 should ever mess with a legend, such as Meryl Streep."

But on Tuesday, the 22-year-old Hunger Games star laughed off suggestions she had something against the three-time Oscar-winning actress, left, when questioned over Lohan's tweet during an interview on the Late Show With *David Letterman *.

"First of all, it's Meryl Streep, you can't offend Meryl Streep," she said.

"I had no idea Lindsay Lohan would take to the Twitterverse (to complain).

"I was like 'Is that what this turned into? I don't like Meryl Streep?' As if I've had my eyes on getting that girl forever."

Questioned over whether Lawrence had heard from Streep, left, the actress quipped: "No, I don't know if I want to - I'm nervous . . . I wanted to make a public statement, like 'Hey idiots, it's a quote from a movie'."
