Just who will take out the title of X Factor victor for 2012 is up in the air after the three finalists put up some stiff competition in their last performances on the grand final show last night.

Perth pop star Samantha Jade, country crooner Jason Owen and boy band the Collective were tasked with singing three songs each — a mentor-chosen tune, a fan favourite from the audition process and their potential winner’s single.

Jade was applauded for her covers of the Script’s Breakeven and Rihanna’s Take a Bow but it was when she stepped out to sing her winner’s track What You’ve Done to Me that the judges and crowd both went wild.

“Sammy, you’re amazing, you’re a star and I want to hear that song on the radio,” Natalie Bassingthwaighte said.

Ronan Keating added he was glad Jade defied the odds to make it to the final.

Following a reel of Owen and mentor Mel B taking a trip to his home town of Albert, in NSW, Owen sang his winner’s single Make It Last along with the Black Keys’ Lonely Boy and his original audition tune, Annie’s Song by John Denver.

Guy Sebastian said that while the teen had tried his hand at many styles during the live shows, it was the kind of song that summed him up best.

“That is who you are,” Sebastian said.

“Record an album full of songs like that.”

The Collective wrapped up the show with Karmin’s hit Brokenhearted following well-received performances of Rihanna’s We Found Love and their would-be winner’s single Surrender.

Mel praised their hard work. “You guys never fail to deliver,” she said. “Your energy when you come out on stage is just amazing.”

The X Factor winner will be announced at 7.30pm today on Seven/GWN.
