WA Ballet is celebrating its diamond anniversary in rare style with a gala ball tomorrow tonight and the appointment of a new leadership team to help it leap into its next stage of development.

On the eve of its glittering fundraising Black and White Ball, the company announced that Belgian ballet master Aurelien Scannella would replace Ivan Cavallari as artistic director for three years starting in January.

WA Ballet leading artist Jayne Smeulders has created a light-hearted tap dance routine for the dancers to perform at the ball.

Smeulders said she would be very sad to see Cavallari leave after six years with the company but looked forward to working with Scannella.

“We don’t really know him but he’s taken a class and speaks with a lovely French accent,” she said.

Local jeweller Linneys has designed a $10,000 necklace, with a three-inch diamond-encrusted bauble shaped like a ballerina, to be auctioned on the night.
