Jaded but not out
Samantha Jade

After almost 10 years trying to crack the music industry, Samantha Jade is ready to give her dream of stardom one last shot. The Perth-raised singer and her family uprooted their life in Lockridge for the glittering lights of Los Angeles in 2003.

However, late last year, the 25-year-old moved home to Australia after a series of false starts.

Her career looked promising when she was signed to Jive Records and worked alongside Wyclef Jean to produce the title track for the popular dance film Step Up. Jade went on to collaborate with uber-producer Timbaland and wrote songs for junior pop princesses JoJo and Ashley Tisdale.

Her debut album, My Name is Samantha Jade, was planned for release in 2006, but was not issued.

"I just really missed home and the music thing wasn't happening over there," she tells AAA of her decision to return home.

"It just didn't work, it didn't stick. It was really frustrating."

When the former Hampton Senior High School student returned home last November to work in her dad's warehouse in Guildford, she came across The X Factor auditions and decided to give fame and fortune one last shot.

"I do feel like this is it for me because I've been doing this since I was 15. I think this is kind of a last attempt and I definitely think The X Factor has brought back my love for music again," she said.

With a plethora of talent shows on Australian TV, The X Factor was an easy choice for Jade, who is close mates with judge and mentor Guy Sebastian.

But Jade - who is dating Swedish producer Christian Nilsson - is quick to quash talk that her friendship with Sebastian will aid her in the competition.

"It's been a little bit weird sometimes because I don't want people to think that I'm just doing well on the show because of Guy," she says. "Guy is a very, very honest person and he doesn't hold anything back - if he thinks you should know something, he will tell you."

Jade's audition will air during the first episode of the new season. The X Factor premieres on Monday at 7.30pm on Seven/GWN7.
