The River

Brian Simmonds

Fremantle Press, $35

Award-winning artist Brian Simmonds' book The River contains more than 90 beautiful illustrations of life on Perth's Swan River.

The paintings, sketches and mixed-media artworks are presented alongside extracts of prose and poetry from local writers such as T.A.G. Hungerford and Elizabeth Jolley.

Together, the images and words create powerful scenes of river life: racing yachts, moored boats, active birdlife and expansive views.

Here's Andrew Lansdown's poem Fishing, which accompanies Simmonds' painting Fishing below Fremantle Traffic Bridge: "We stand on the shore/and cast out lines from us. We/both wait for something//unknown to bite, for the tug/at the line's far-away end."
