There is mounting speculation that grains co-operative CBH will appoint one-time Perth and Sydney airports boss and WA Tourism Commission chair Alan Mulgrew to its board as an independent director.

The well-regarded Mr Mulgrew would fill a vacancy created in December when Samantha Tough quit after being caught in the crossfire between warring factions on a board representing 4300 grower members.

CBH would not comment though an announcement is thought to be imminent.

Mr Mulgrew, who serves as Western Power's chairman, made his name as an airports executive, having run Perth and Sydney. He remains on the boards of the Adelaide Airport and Queensland Airports, which owns regional operations including Gold Coast and Townsville.

The CBH board is dominated by farmer representatives, which ensures the position of the independent director is strategically significant.
