Innovation behind air drill

The Flexi-Coil 5500 air drill frame is designed to be flexible for superior land-following ability.

With 60 years of innovation behind it, Flexi-Coil's 5500 air drill delivers the sowing accuracy that growers need to maximise their yields and their profits, according to Flexi-Coil brand leader Steve Mulder.

Mr Mulder said the 5500 air drill offered accuracy of placement that ensured the best possible start for crops.

"Like all of our models, the 5500 air drill is designed to place seed at exactly the right depth," he said.

"Growers really can't overestimate the importance of depth control at seeding.

"Too deep can stifle or delay emergence, while too shallow can lead to low germination. You only get one chance to plant each seed, so it's worth doing everything you can to get it right.

"Ensuring accurate seed placement can help growers achieve higher yields from fast-emerging, uniform crops."

The 5500 air drill has single-point depth control that allows for accurate, repeatable seeding depth even in undulating terrain.

It can penetrate hard soils or soft soils and will deliver seed and fertiliser exactly where it needs to go and the packing system ensures good soil to seed contact and faster, even germination.

Press wheels are a key feature on the 5500 air drill, with semi-pneumatic, steel or walking beam pneumatic options.

Rubber press wheels are available in three, four and 5.5 inch sizes, depending on the desired field finish, and row spacing.

The 5500 air drill has a unique configuration consisting of two front ranks that follow the contours of the terrain at a depth set by nearby castor assemblies, along with two rear ranks that follow the ground on which the press wheels run.

This allows it to achieve exact and repeatable sowing depth.

The frame has a unique wing-up and fold-back design for a reduced profile for easy transport.

"The unit folds down to just 5.4m wide - only 200mm wider than most tractors - no small feat when you consider the 5500 air drill is available in widths of 18.3m (60 ft) and 21.3m (70 ft) for large operations," Mr Mulder said.

"The frame is designed to be flexible for superior land following ability and to help dissipate frame stress."

Mr Mulder said with the seeding season about to start, now was the ideal time to consider upgrading equipment and think about forward ordering to take advantage of discounts on offer for early orders.

"Getting seeding right sets you up for the best possible season," he said.
