Narrogin bull sale to $10,250

With the $9000 second top-priced Poll Hereford bull, Terraneil Ledger J20, were Mike Woods, of Terraneil stud, Beverley, buyers Shane and Nicola Kelliher, of Wandering.

Continued increased cattle prices resulted in average prices lifting at the Countryman Invitational Bull Sale last week at the WA College of Agriculture, Narrogin.

Most vendors enjoyed higher average prices when the offering of 62 bulls, over seven breeds, resulted in 46 selling for an overall average of $4902, an increase of $257 per head on last year when 43 bulls sold for an average of $4645.

  • POLL HEREFORD *

Last year's $11,500 record top-price Terraneil Poll Hereford bull was not matched, but the stud sold strongly to achieve a back-to-back new record average price, this year lifting to $6661 with all 14 bulls sold to a top of $10,250.

Terry Woods, of Terraneil, said over the past few years Poll Hereford studs had made the Narrogin sale their main fixture.

Terraneil's success with Poll Hereford sire Yagaburne Ledger C861 continued this year when a son, Terraneil Harry J43, sold for $10,250 to first-time buyer A Bennet of Bendalla stud, Mundalla, South Australia, who bid by phone.

Mr Woods said he visited the stud recently and Bendalla stud co-principal Andrew Bennett was impressed with a photo of J43.

The 902kg bull recorded EBV growth rates of +32, +46 and +67 for 200, 400 and 600-day weights and was positive for rib and rump fat.

Wandering and Darkan cattle producer Shane Kelliher bought the $9000 second top-priced bull, Terraneil Ledger J20, also sired by Yagaburne Ledger, which sired last year's $11,500 record top-price Terraneil bull, sold to NSW.

Mr Kelliher said the bull was well muscled and would go over Poll Hereford/Shorthorn-cross cows.

The under bidder on this bull was Bob Treasure of Wandering.

As a testament to the success of Poll Hereford cattle, Mr Kelliher bought nine bulls from two studs for an average price of $5250.

Three Terraneil bulls sold for $8500 each to three separate buyers, including DC & DH Bray of Ravensthorpe, securing Terraneil J50, PA & TS Husbands of Northampton, with success on J35, and KA Sewell of Eneabba on J13.

Quaindering Poll Hereford stud sold all 12 bulls offered to a top of $7500, bought by EL & BM Hill of Ravensthorpe.

  • SHORTHORN *

With only two Shorthorn bulls on offer, it was Catholic Agriculture College's Statue Hill Jerimiah J10 that sold successfully for $3000 to Blythewood Pastoral of Pinjarra.

  • LINCOLN RED *

Back to the sale with another seven Lincoln Red bulls, Tone Park stud of Boyup Brook sold all to a top of $7000 to first-time buyer Guy Bennett, of Nethercote, NSW, who secured Tone Park J7 via phone link.

Tone Park stud co-principal David Turner said Mr Bennett bought a Tone Park heifer at the 2013 Sydney Royal Show and was reciprocal on the bull - selected for its thickness to put into vealer production.

Other first-time buyers were Steven and Desrae Lee Steere of Boyup Brook, who bought two Tone Park bulls after buying the stud's PTIC heifers at the recent Mt Barker female sale.

"We will put the bulls over Murray Grey/Simmental-cross heifers for extra calving ease and fat cover," Mr Lee Steere said.

Overall, Tone Park sold to an average price of $4357, up $323 per head on last year.

  • MURRAY GREY *

Half of the Murray Grey offering of 20 bulls from two studs sold, which was six more bulls then last year.

Young Guns stud of Hyden cleared eight of its 15 bulls for an average price of $4625, which was up $679/head on last year.

Of particular interest, Young Guns Juggernaut J33, sold to the $7000 top price to repeat buyer Frank James of Hyden.

He said the bull was a good all-rounder and would go over older pure Murray Grey cows to breed replacement heifers for his family's 150-cow herd. The bull recorded EBV growths of +48, +32 and +44 for 200, 400 and 600-day weights.

Karlgarin cattle producers JS & PA Forrest paid $6250 for Young Guns J46 and bought J13 for $5750.

Wundam Park Murray Grey stud sold two Murray Grey bulls for $3000 each, with one, WP Jamboree J3, sold to new buyer Melvin Hettner of Kojonup, who said the bull was the most correct Murray Grey in the catalogue.

  • ANGUS *

WA College of Agriculture, Narrogin, offered four Angus bulls, but these failed to receive bids.

  • RED POLL *

Two Red Poll bulls were on offer, with one, Yongerellen Jacob Murray J03, sold to first-time buyer Peter Paterson of Williams, who said he would put it over Angus heifers.

  • CHAROLAIS *

Only one Charolais bull was on offer, Wundam Glen Jannu J5E, which sold for $4000 to KT Smith & Co, of Bridgetown.

Elders, Landmark and Primaries conducted the sale.
