Wild Kimberley weather snaps

A station worker in the Kimberley has snapped stunning pictures of storm clouds rolling across the region during this week's heavy rains.

Nerrima station cook Dan Mcintosh said the Tuesday afternoon storm missed the main station building but brought welcome rain to the property 120km south east of Derby.

"Every bit of rain counts. Once the season ends we don't get rain again until December."

Mr McIntosh said roll clouds like the one he photographed normally occurred in February and it was rare to see them so late in the year.

"This was the second in two days and the first one bought a dust storm, which is also unusual."

Mr McIntosh said he and a station hand were walking back to shelter when the clouds approached but they managed to avoid the rain and hail.

"Just as we got under cover it veered away," he said.

"It missed us by half a mile and went across the paddock."

The Kimberley has escaped the flooding rains that have hit the Pilbara.

The Great Northern highway between Meekatharra and Newman is still closed to light vehicles after 119.6mm fell between 11.30pm Saturday and 9am Monday.

The community of Jigalong is still stranded by the flooding.

The Fortescue River Side Track, Paraburdoo-Tom Price Road to Bingarn Road, and Bingarn Road to Hamersley Road are all closed to vehicles.

The Nanutarra-Munjina Road to Paraburdoo is open to trucks and four-wheel-drives only.
