Austal delivers fifth high-speed ship

Austal says it has delivered its fifth joint high-speed vessel to the US Navy.

The USNS Trenton is the fifth such vessel built by Austal at its shipyard in Mobile, Alabama, under a 10-ship, $US1.6 billion contract.

Chief executive Andrew Bellamy said the delivery of USNS Trenton to the US Navy was a strong reminder of the significant progress that the company had made through operational improvements at its US shipyard since construction began on the first ship in the series.

"The JHSV program continues to mature with each successful delivery," he said.

"We have received many positive reports about how the first four JHSVs have been performing in the fleet, and we are encouraged about the future of the JHSV program."

Austal will deliver another five such vessels, three of which were already under construction.

Austal is also building seven littoral combat ships, all at various stages of construction at its US shipyard under a 10-vessel, $US3.5 billion contract the US Navy awarded in 2010.

Shares in Austal were steady at $1.93 at 11.50am.
