Mining contractor Macmahon has reported the death of a worker at the Tropicana gold project in the Great Victoria Desert 330km north east of Kalgoorlie.

It is understood the worker died overnight in his sleep while off shift.

Macmahon chief executive Ross Carroll said the company's immediate focus was on providing support to the family of the deceased and to other employees on site.

"We are very saddened by this news. Counselling services have been made available to all who have been affected by the incident," he said.

Tropicana is a joint venture between AngloGold Ashanti (70 per cent) and Independence Group (30 per cent).

Macmahon has a 10-year contract to provide mining services at the project.
