BHP Billiton Iron Ore has launched an internal investigation after a 60-year-old employee broke his leg on a mine site near Newman.

The man was airlifted to Perth via the Royal Flying Doctor Service on Tuesday after an incident at BHP’s Eastern Ridge site.

He is in a stable condition at Royal Perth Hospital.

A BHP spokeswoman said a “thorough” internal investigation was underway.

The Department of Mines and Petroleum confirmed it was aware of the incident.
