Australian consumer confidence may still be low but that has not stopped online sales increasing by 19 per cent.
The National Australia Bank Online Retail Sales Index shows online spending in June was up 19 per cent from June 2011, and up 14 per cent from May.
But the growth rate for online retail sales is significantly lower than in the previous year.
June 2011's online retail growth was up 32 per cent compared with the same month in 2010.
Nonetheless, online sales growth has been stronger than that of bricks and mortar stores, which rose from 0.2 per cent in June 2011 to 4.2 per cent in June 2012, in non-seasonally adjusted terms.
After seasonal adjustment, the bricks and mortar growth was more modest. May was up 2.8 per cent compared with the same month the previous year, and April's up 1.7 per cent.
The value of online retail sales is equivalent to 5.3 per cent of the traditional retail sector, NAB said.
