38-level South Perth tower gets nod

Finbar has received approval for its controversial $380 million 38-storey mixed-use development "Civic Heart" project in South Perth.

The company said this morning the 294 apartment project, which also has 11,900m² of commercial office and retail space, was approved by the State Government.

The site is bordered by Mends Street, Labouchere Road and Mill Point Road in South Perth.

However the approval is sure to be met with anger by some South Perth residents who are concerned about the scale of planned high-rise buildings in the area.

The company said the first 25 levels of apartments will be a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments.

Level 26 though to level 35 will have larger three bedroom "sky homes" with the top floor housing two penthouses.

Finbar said the ground floor would be turned into a neighbourhood shopping centre a café fronting Mends Street and the refurbishment of the heritage listed former Police Station into a café or restaurant.

The heritage listed Post Office building would continue to operate as a Post Office, the company said, and be integrated further into the new building design.
