Man dies after lightning strikes campers on top of Mount Warning

A man has died and another woman is injured after lightning struck a group of people on top of Mount Warning near Murwillumbah.

Emergency services were called to top of Mt Warning at 4:50am on Tuesday after two people were struck while camping on the top of the mountain.

The injured woman is suffering from singed hair and a stiff neck, NSW Ambulance said.

Police told 7 News Online the woman was part of a group of three to four campers. The sexes, age and nationality of the others is yet to be confirmed.

A rescue operation co-ordinated by officers from the Tweed/Byron Local Area Command, NSW Ambulance and the State Emergency Service are on the scene.

The mountain has had over 60mm of rain throughout the morning.
