Australia Post to trial evening parcel deliveries

Australia Post are set to start a trial delivering parcels in the early evening.

It's hoped the trial will build on Australia Post's latest $36 million profit, in a turnaround from last year's $222 million loss.

The change comes as the parcel business begins to boom, and loss-making letter services are further cut back.

"We've protected tax payers from what looked like a six billion dollar blowout in the losses that we were going to incur," a spokesperson for Australia Post told 7 News.

A boom in internet shopping has seen profits from parcel deliveries rise by eight percent.

Recent shake-ups of Australia Post's ailing letters business has made mailing a letter more expensive and slower.

Some letters now take two to ten days to arrive.

The number of letters mailed slumped by ten percent.

"We are in a structural decline in our letters business," a spokesperson for Australia Post said.

To counterbalance the letter slump and capitalise on parcel growth, Australia Post will now be trialing evening parcel deliveries, when Australians are more likely to be home.

Packages will be brought to homes between the hours of five and seven in the evening.

According to Australia Post, delivery by drone is still under review.
