The explosion reportedly occurred near a music festival in the town of Ansbach, heightening fears of a terror attack in the wake of the Munich shootings.
German police are investigating a suspected bomb attack, although the cause of the blast is yet to be officially announced.
In a statement, authorities said "a man, according to our current knowledge the perpetrator, died".
Police quickly cordoned off the area with fears for the nearby open-air festival. At least 10 people were injured.

On Saturday, 18-year-old Ali David Sonboly opened fire on the public outside a McDonald's restaurant in Munich, killing nine people before turning the gun on himself.
Police believe the teen had no links to ISIS and have labelled him a lone wolf.
Sonboly was reportedly obsessed with mass killers and terrorists and was believed to be inspired by Norwegian right-wing fanatic Anders Behring Breivik.
The attack in Munich took place on the fifth anniversary of Breivik's attack in Oslo.
On Sunday, A 21-year-old Syrian asylum-seeker killed a woman and injured two people with a machete in the southwest city of Reutlingen.
Local police said the incident did not bear the hallmarks of a "terrorist attack".
