Motorists fume at 'cockroach' cyclist

An inconsiderate cyclist has angered peak-hour motorists in Adelaide’s Inner South.

Cycling groups warned his reckless riding is a reminder that safety is the responsibility of all road users.

The 'metre matters' message clearly has not got through to this lane hog.

In the morning peak hour, city bound on Belair Road, he steers well wide of a vacant bike lane.

“Little bit frustrating that we are not sharing the roads,” said one motorist, Lee Cook.

Far from jockeying for position to turn right, he eventually turns left.

It was all caught on Cook’s dashcam.

“There was another motorist that did toot the guy, but there was not any recognition from the cyclist at all that there was anything going on around him,” he said.

This guy was caught just before the cycling lane became active at 7.30am, but Bike SA said it was no excuse.

“That is what the bike lane is there for, for your safety. Use it,” said Bike SA’s Christian Haag.

Other road users expressed their anger, with one calling the cyclist “a cockroach on wheels,” while another said: “you get idiots like that, that get in accidents, it is their own fault but they blame everyone else”.

Irresponsible cycling can also be expensive.

South Australian Police warned that failure to ride in an active bicycle lane earns a fine of $114.

“We have changed the laws to look after you, protect you as a rider.”
