Girls switched at birth reunited with biological parents

Two girls who were mistakenly switched at birth have been reunited with their birth parents after the hospital's error was discovered on Facebook.

The Daily Mail reported that Lorena and Antonella were born in Puglia, Italy on the same day in 1989.

After being labelled with bracelets, hospital staff mistakenly gave mothers the wrong babies.

Lorena was given to Caterina and Michele Cobuzzi while Antonella was given to Loreta and Luigi Mazzone.

The Cobuzzis discovered the shocking truth when they saw a Facebook picture of Antonella and were struck by how much she looked liked Caterina.

After seeing the photo the couple, determining both girls had been born in the same hospital on the same day, decided to get a DNA test that proved Antonella was their biological daughter.

Lorena told the Mail she felt "physically sick" when the people she thought were her birth parents told her of the hospital's error.

"They sat me down and told me they had something important to tell me. They said there had been two families at the hospital that day. They said the babies had been swapped." she said.

"The feeling was terrible - I didn’t know who I was anymore. I didn’t know who to call mum and dad."

Both girls and their families are suing the hospital for millions of dollars for the mix-up.

Lorena’s lawyer Stefano di Feo told Mail the case was the first of its kind in Italy.

"Of course babies have been swapped accidentally at hospitals before. But this is the first time anyone has found out after 24 years," he said.
