$1b IT budget query

The State Government is launching an inquiry into its $1 billion-plus annual spend on information and communications technology.

The public accounts committee will review the “ongoing procurement of ICT goods and services”. A damning report by WA Auditor-General Colin Murphy last year found WA would continue to pay millions above what it needed to for ICT if it failed to tighten its technology procurement.

The committee is led by Liberal MP Sean L’Estrange who toldWestBusiness the committee decided to look into the “extremely complex” area following Mr Murphy’s report.

He said it was a move to try and find the “best-practice” scenario for Government.

The announcement follows last month’s Budget where the State Government flagged $110 million worth of cuts in its ICT spending, with the Department of Education set to be the hardest hit.
