Cable Beach closed after shark sighting

Sunset at Cable Beach, Broome.

The sighting of a 4.5m tiger shark forced Cable Beach to close this afternoon.

Shire of Broome acting senior lifeguard Cally Emmins said lifeguards received a call from a helicopter pilot this morning saying he had spotted what looked like a tiger shark.

Ms Emmins said the predator was spotted about 50-100 metres offshore.

Two stand-up paddle boarders sighted the shark near Flat Rock at about 1.30pm, prompting lifeguards to close the beach.

Ms Emmins said she also spotted the shark about an hour later.

She said schools of fish tended to hang around reefs during neap tides, which could have attracted the shark.
