Elizabeth Quay bridge takes shape

The first giant steel arch of the Elizabeth Quay shared pedestrian-cycle bridge was lifted into place yesterday as the bold waterfront development marches towards opening to the public late this year.

Water is slowly starting to fill the inlet as excavators remove about 4000 tonnes of soil and Guildford clay from it each day. About 35 per cent of the excavation has been completed.

The second arch of the 110m bridge, which will connect the inlet island with the western edge of the quay, will arrive at the site in about three weeks.

Planning Minister John Day said the bridge would be a unique and distinctive architectural feature for Perth's skyline and would reconnect the walking and cycle route along the river.
