Melbourne Victory are believed to be in the driving seat to sign Danny Vukovic after Perth Glory released the goalkeeper from his contract.

Despite reportedly being disgruntled following Football Federation Australia's decision to ban Glory from this year's A-League finals for rorting the salary cap, Vukovic said in a statement released by the club that his wish to move was for "family reasons".

In the statement, the 30-year-old said he wanted to be closer to his family because his wife Kristy was expecting their first child in July.

Vukovic made 106 appearances for Glory after signing four years ago from Wellington and played in the 2012 grand final loss to Brisbane Roar.

He signed for Japanese side Vegalta Sendai on loan 14 months ago but returned early without playing a J-League game.

Western Sydney were linked with a move for Vukovic over the weekend but Victory are believed to be the front-runners following the departure of reserve keeper Nathan Coe.
