West Coast considering surgery for Kennedy

West Coast have not ruled out sending Josh Kennedy for surgery, with football manager Craig Vozzo describing his elbow injury as “complex”.

Kennedy was listed as a test on the club’s injury list yesterday, keeping him in contention to play against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

But the prognosis could be bleak, with Vozzo casting doubt over the Coleman Medal leader’s availability.

Kennedy had scans on Monday and visited a specialist yesterday for further advice on his right elbow, injured in a marking contest during the second quarter of last Saturday night’s 87-point win over Greater Western Sydney.

He returned after half-time with the elbow strapped and finished with six goals.

It is believed Kennedy sprained the ligaments in the joint and may have also sustained nerve damage.

“It’s a complex injury, so we’re going through the assessment phase at the minute,” Vozzo said.

“We’re still hopeful that he may have avoided a long-term problem, but we’ll know in the next day or so.”

Kennedy’s potential absence could open the door for dumped ruckman Scott Lycett.

The 22-year-old was dropped for the Giants game and issued a savage appraisal of his form.

Lycett said he was not living up to his own standards and had let down coach Adam Simpson and his teammates.

He had 21 disposals, 32 hit-outs, eight marks and kicked a goal for East Perth against South Fremantle last weekend.

“Simmo obviously wants me to come back and work on some things,” Lycett said.

“I personally don’t think I’m up to the standards that I was last year as well. I’ve got a good challenge in front of me now to get back in the side.

“I’m going to work my a... off to get back in there and hopefully once I’m back in, I can stay in.”
