Explosive haul found in boot

Two people are being held by Northam police after a routine traffic stop allegedly uncovered a massive cache of explosives.

A man and a woman, believed to be in their 20s, were pulled over in Northam about 1.30am.

Officers allegedly found 152 sticks of Senatel Magnum explosive in the boot of the car.

Senatel Magnum is a mine-grade plastic explosive manufactured by Australian-based multinational Orica at their Kalgoorlie plant.

Orica describes the product as a “robust, maximum strength” explosive which “delivers very high shock and heave".

It is “formulated specifically to achieve higher energy and a higher density than other emulsion explosives".

The Orica website warns users to avoid heat, static electricity, friction and impact.

A Northam police spokesman said he had never seen a seizure of that type on that scale.

The man and woman remain in custody, pending charges.

There were no obvious links to criminal organisations.

It is understood police are executing search warrants this morning as part of the investigation.
