West Australian have joined thousands across the country posting photos of themselves wearing beanies on social media to raise awareness for brain cancer.

The trending Twitter hashtag #beaniesforbraincancer began after TV presenter Carrie Bickmore wore a blue beanie during her Gold Logie acceptance speech last night.

West Australian followed her lead today, posting pictures of themselves wearing their beanies.

Perth-born Bickmore lost her husband Greg Lange to brain cancer in 2011.

She thanked Walker for showing her “there can be sunshine at the end of a long road” and wore the beanie to promote brain cancer awareness.

“I want to ask anybody that’s on TV in Australia tomorrow to whack on a beanie I want to get the nation talking about brain cancer — it receives next to no funding which is ludicrous," she said.

"Because without funding more people are going to die and as I just said eight out of 10 people that are diagnosed will die from this disease."
