New chief-of-staff for Barnett

Premier Colin Barnett

Premier Colin Barnett has a new chief of staff.

Peter (Willie) Rowe, will take on the pivotal role on May 11, three days before the State Budget, as a replacement for Brian Pontifex.

Mr Pontifex stepped down last month to become an ambassador to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, a role he was recommended for by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.

In a statement this morning, Mr Barnett said Mr Rowe would bring to the role “extensive experience in government relations and issues management, and expertise in corporate governance and compliance”.

“I am delighted Mr Rowe has chosen to join my office after more than 20 years across government, the private sector, community-based and not-for-profit organisations,” Mr Barnett said.

Mr Rowe will step down as chair of ScreenWest and president of the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations today.

University of WA history and accounting graduate Mr Rowe was chief of staff to former ministers George Cash (mines) and Kevin Minson (works) in Richard Court’s government during the 1990s.

He has since worked in government and corporate relations.

Mr Barnett thanked Mr Pontifex for his contribution over five years and wished him well in his new role.
