Brother of Adelaide actor missing in Nepal earthquake

The younger brother of Adelaide actor Hugh Sheridan is among dozens of Australians listed as missing after an earthquake struck Nepal killing more than 1,800 people and triggering a fatal avalanche on Mount Everest.

The Packed to the Rafters star turned to Twitter to express his concern for his sibling, Zachary.

"Please. Anyone who is awake, please pray for my little brother Zachary who is on Mt Everest, I'd appreciate every prayer you have spare x," he tweeted.

Zachary has not made contact with family or friends since April 22 when he was at Namche Bazar, described as the gateway to Everest.

Their other brother, Will Sheridan, told the ABC Zachary had been trekking for days on his way to base camp so he had been out of range.

"My feeling is that he is fine and he is with a guide, but the trekking company can't contact them," Will said.

It is feared at least 17 people have been killed after an avalanche triggered by Nepal's massive earthquake slammed into a section of the Mount Everest mountaineering base camp.

Another 61 people have been injured.

Senior trekking guide Ang Tshering, of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, said early on Sunday that 22 of the seriously injured have been taken by helicopter to Pheriche village, the nearest medical facility.

Several helicopters more helicopters landed at Mount Everest base camp earlier this afternoon to rescue victims of the avalanche.

"People being stretchered out as choppers land - half a dozen this morning," AFP's Nepal bureau chief Ammu Kannampilly said in a text message.

"Weather clear, some snowfall."

Tshering says the avalanche began on Saturday on Mount Kumori, a 7,000-metre-high mountain just a few kilometres from Everest, gathering strength as it headed toward the base camp where climbing expeditions have been preparing to make their summit attempts.

Dozens of concerned Australians are seeking information about family members and friends still missing in the disaster-stricken region.
