Fremantle defender Michael Johnson has rejected approaches from other clubs to sign a two-year contract with the Dockers.

Johnson was an unrestricted free agent but signed to remain a Docker until the end of 2017.

He said other clubs showed interest but he couldn’t leave the club when it was performing so strongly.

“There were a few clubs that approached my manager,” Johnson said.

“I was an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year so there were a few clubs that put their hand up but I knew my manager was working pretty closely with the Fremantle Footy Club. We knew there was going to be a deal done soon.

“I’m stoked, the club is stoked and my family is pretty happy as well.

“Exciting times are happening down at Fremantle. It’s good to be part of it. To have another couple of years down at the club with these up and coming players coming through is exciting.”

Johnson has been at Fremantle during tough times and successful times. He was part of the 2006 preliminary final team and the 2013 grand final squad.

He said the club was now the best placed for success that it had been at any point of his career.

Johnson felt the chance to play his entire career for the club he barracked for was an amazing opportunity.

“I was a Dockers supporter before I got here and it looks like I’ll finish my career here as well. I’m pretty stoked.

“It’s a big thing for all AFL players if they can last over 10 years and be a one club player. It’s something special. When I leave the club, I’ll look back and see the way the club developed me as a player and a person.”
