Geraldton couple say their House Rules

Geraldton couple Karina and Brian Day reckon they have what it takes to win the new series of House Rules and it isn't an impressive collection of tools.

The 40-somethings say years of financial hardship and being the oldest couple in the forthcoming Seven reality home-renovation competition will give them the edge.

"Brian and I have been struggling for quite a while now," Karina, 42, told AAA Weekend.

"We've each had mortgages over our heads for at least 15 years now and because we've got kids and we've had this burden on us for so long, we're going to be more driven."

The married couple bought their house in the Geraldton suburb of Moresby four years ago and didn't believe they'd get on to the show because of their remote location.

"I can still remember exactly where I was standing on the property when I got the phone call," Brian, 44, said.

"It was like winning Lotto. I was in disbelief.

"I kept asking 'Are you sure?'"

House Rules will see them hand over their keys to competitors from other States to renovate each room of their house.

Karina, a qualified drafter, and Brian, who once owned a shed-building company, have a previous home renovation under their belts but it's Brian who'll be taking the styling lead.

"He's got a really good sense of styling whereas I've always been strapped for cash," Karina said.

"He's got to take the lead with styling in the beginning and I'll be his trainee - once we hit those shops it will be a totally new experience for me."

The pair will celebrate their seventh wedding anniversary later this month and admit that while they're bound to have some "head-butting" moments, they're in it for the win.

"At times we're cohesive and then there's head-butting times, but I feel like we'll be more solid than the younger couples," Karina said.

"We've just got to try and get to the end as best we can."
