Perth's population hits two million
Perth is now a city of two million residents.
The city’s total population grew 2.5 per cent or 48,400 people through the 2013-14 financial year to reach an all-time high of just over two million.
In the decade between 2004 and 2014 last year, Perth’s population swelled by 500,000 or 137 people a day.
Only Melbourne, which added almost 800,000 residents, and Sydney, with an extra 655,000 people, had bigger population increases over the period.
Perth added 50,000 more residents than Brisbane although other parts of Queensland also grew quickly.
Within Perth, the city’s south-west is adding residents more quickly than the northern suburbs.
Baldivis added 3500 people over the past 12 months, while Bertram-Wellard, Byford, Forrestdale and Harrisdale all had double-digit growth.
The city is now home to 78.5 per cent of WA’s 2.5 million residents. A decade earlier, 76.7 per cent of WA people called Perth home.
