Cinderella sweeps to top of the box office

Cinderella has climbed to the top of the Australian Box office, not bad for a girl with just one shoe.

Walt Disney's latest take on the fairytale has brought in more than $4 million in its first week of release, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.

With local lady Cate Blanchett recently admitting she enjoyed being the wicked stepmother, it's no wonder Aussies are rushing to see the film, even though they already know the ending.

Youth dystopian flick, Insurgent, slips to second place after opening in the top spot last week.

Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart's comedy Get Hard comes in at No.3 during its first week in release, perhaps a little disappointing for the comic pair, especially considering Hart alone has 18 million Twitter followers.

However, the funny men can take comfort in the fact that they're still above animated movie Home, which features the voices of J Lo and Rihanna.

Margot Robbie's scene-stealing turn in Focus comes in at No.5 in the film's fourth week in release, while The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel lingers in the top 10 at No.6, five weeks since its release.

Shaun the Sheep noses ahead of SpongeBob SquarePants in seventh and eighth respectively.

But it's a tough day at the office for action man Liam Neeson, whose film Run All Night takes out the ninth spot, not quite the dizzying highs he's enjoyed from the Taken franchise.

Hugh Jackman-starring Chappie falls four places to round out the top 10 on its third week of release.
