Girl finds pet dog cooked and ready for sale

A little girl in Vietnam searching for her lost dog has reportedly stumbled across her pet in a local market, cooked and ready for sale.

A picture of the girl crying and with her hand on the dog has gone viral on social media in the country, the world.people.com reports.

The dog had not been seen for several days after wandering away from home.

The girl is thought to be aged about five and from a village in north Vietnam.

According to the local report, the picture prompted discussion about the habit of eating dog meat, with same people saying it should be banned.

Dogs for human consumption were once imported from neighbouring countries, but that is now banned under pressure from animals rights groups.

The tightening of rules has seen a lucrative trade in dogs grow within Vietnam, with animal thefts increasing.

A documentary made by Britain's Channel 4 last year revealed seven tonnes of live dogs are shipped to Hanoi every day.

Many of these dogs are pets stolen from gardens and front porches at night.
