Iraqi admits people smuggling

A people smuggler who spent years fighting his extradition from Malaysia to face court in Australia has admitted two charges at an appearance in a Perth court this morning.

Sayed Omeid had been scheduled to face a four-week trial starting next month, but pleaded guilty to the two charges in the District Court in Perth.

A third charge was discontinued by the Commonwealth after Omeid entered the guilty pleas.

Omeid, an Iraqi citizen who was assisted in court by an interpreter, will be sentenced on May 15.

The two charges relate to organising boats which arrived in Australia carrying groups of non-citizens in 2001.

Omeid was charged in 2010, but fought his deportation from Malaysia until he was extradited in 2013.
