A commercial airplane skidded off the runway and crashed into a chain-link fence while landing at LaGuardia Airport during a snowstorm Thursday morning in New York.

Passengers aboard Delta Flight 1086, which was touching down after a flight from Atlanta, were evacuated by sliding down inflated chutes, Reuters reported.

The Federal Aviation Administration said that runways at the airport were closed after the incident, which is standard procedure.

The plane carrying 125 passengers and five crew members went off the runway about 11:10 a.m., according to the Associated Press.

Some took to social media to share images of the crash site in several inches of snow on a strip of land close to Flushing Bay.

Larry Donnell, a professional football player for the New York Giants, was a passenger aboard the flight.

The Giants released a statement on behalf of the tight end confirming that he was unharmed in the incident, reported ESPN.

"I'm blessed to be safe and sound after our plane skidded off the runway at LaGuardia airport today," it reads.

"I feel fine physically and hopefully all the other passengers did not have any significant injuries.

"We were all shocked and alarmed when the plane started to skid, but most importantly, as far as I know, all of the passengers and flight crew were able to exit the plane safely."

A source with the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey told NBC New York that the impact caused a fuel leak on the left wing, though it is not thought to be significant.

National Transportation Safety Board spokeswoman Kelly Nantel said they will send an investigator to secure the jetliner's flight data and cockpit voice recorders, according to the AP.

The investigator will also document the damage to the plane and collect other information.

LaGuardia is reportedly expected to reopen around 7 pm, when a winter storm warning should be lifted. Emergency rescue crews are on site.

The incident occurred on LaGuardia's primary runway, which is 7,003 feet long and 150 feet wide.

Joe Pentangelo, a Port Authority spokesman, said that six people suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency workers are still assessing people but no major injuries have been reported.
