Iron ore exports at Australia's largest bulk commodity port have increased 28 per cent on a year ago as the nation's biggest iron ore miners increase volumes.

Exports through Port Hedland totalled 36.6 million tonnes in January, up 7.8 million tonnes on the same month in 2014, figures from the Pilbara Ports Authority show.

On a monthly basis, iron ore exports from Port Hedland were broadly flat.
