Scorched SW sculpture in seaside show

Bridgetown sculptor Kim Perrier’s creation Ashes to Ashes will be on show as part of Sculpture by the Sea from March 6.

TWO of Bridgetown's sculptors will be represented at Sculpture by the Sea in Cottesloe this year.

First-time exhibitor Kim Perrier said he was excited to join long-time Sculpture by the Sea entrant Tony Davis in showing work at the 2015 show.

Measuring 3.7m by about 1m, Perrier created his work Ashes to Ashes from a hollow marri log found by the roadside at Yornup.

He first moulded human faces in plaster then burnt them into the log to merge the human forms with the wood.

The idea to use charcoal came when he was working on his earlier Humanature exhibition and spending time in the bush where fire had left its mark.

"I brought it home and made a cast with the charcoal and put it in with some glue, and it worked," he said.

Among the 30 or so faces peering out from the scorched bark are those of Eugene 'Hideaway' Bridges, who performed at last year's Blues at Bridgetown festival.

Also represented is Noongar elder Eugene Eades.

"It's got a lot of stories, it seems to tell a different story to everybody," Perrier said.

"The first thing that Eugene Eades said is: 'Just imagine the average age of all these people and add it up and that piece has 2000 years of experience'."

About 70 sculptures from artists living in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Asia and the US will be featured in Perth's 11th annual celebration of the 3-D art.

Sculpture by the Sea was first held at Bondi in Sydney in 1997, and launched in Perth in 2005 and in Aarhus, Denmark in 2009.

The Perth show opens on March 6 and continues until March 23.
