Pregnant woman discovers 'labour pains' actually bowel cancer

An expectant mother has received the devastating news that the pain she thought was caused by the early arrival of her child was in fact bowel cancer.

The Daily Mail reported that a year ago 32-year-old British woman Nina Langley was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, a disease which sometimes has similar symptoms to bowel cancer.

During her pregnancy she suffered pain in her ribs and shoulder but doctors told her it was probably caused by the strain of pregnancy.

When she experienced "excruciating pain" seven-and-a-half months into her pregnancy she assumed it was an early labour and went to hospital to prepare to give birth to her son Teddy.

However, when Miss Langley arrived at the emergency department she was told the pain was in fact caused by by bowel cancer that had spread to her liver.

According to the Daily Mail she had an emergency Caesarean to deliver the child six weeks early so she could start life-saving treatment.

She is set to start chemotherapy once her body has recovered from the Caesarean.

Miss Langley's fiancee Ed Cusick told the Daily Mail he was heartbroken by the news.

"Nina is my whole world and I'm completely devastated that she has been diagnosed with cancer," he said.

"We were so excited about becoming parents but Nina's shocking diagnosis has overshadowed our happiness."

Mr Cusick said he had set up a website to raise funds for specialist treatments that weren't available under Britain's health care system.
