Japanese band brings new style to King Street

King Street, the centre of style in Perth, has never seen anything like it.

Tokyo-based "death jazz" band Soil and "Pimp" Sessions, strutting their stuff down the centre of the street.

And the group, who only touched down in Perth late yesterday afternoon, drew a crowd.

"So you wear that bloody stuff on the plane," a man wearing a CFMEU shirt, who had had a couple, asked the group as they sat at the nearby Belgium Beer Cafe.

"Yes, yes we do," replied Shacho, the band's "president".

Though the outfits may be slightly uncomfortable on a plane, particularly the 15-plus hours it takes to get from Tokyo to Perth, they look great on stage.

The band are set to rock out for their first Perth performance as part of the Perth International Arts Festival's contemporary music line-up at the Chevron Festival Gardens tonight.

Soil and "Pimp" will be the Gardens' - as the stage is affectionately known to music fans - third last gig, with the site due to make way for Perth's new museum next year.

The venue has gone out with a bang, with most music fans labelling this year's contemporary music line-up the strongest ever.

Shacho said he and the band were honoured to play a part in Perth's annual arts festival.

But there was one thing they wanted to do during their time in Australia.

"We want to pat a wombat," Shacho said.
