Geraldton lashed by storm

Homes were damaged as Geraldton was lashed by heavy rains during thunderstorms overnight.

Authorities received more than 21 calls for help after roofs were damaged and flooded occurred between the suburbs of Wonthella and Wandina late last night.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services says Rangeway and central Geraldton were the worst hit, with people in the area making 13 calls for help.

There have also been reports of flooding in nearby Mullewa.

People in the area have been urged to stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways and avoid fallen trees, debris and powerlines.

Great Northern Highway from Meekatharra to Newman has been closed to light vehicles and Marble Bar Road is closed from Newman to Nullagine.

People are urged to take extreme caution while driving on Geraldton-Mt Magnet Road from Yalgoo to Mt Magnet and Great North Highway from Kumarina to Meekatharra and from Mt Magnet to Wubin.
