Plane turned back in storm

Homes were damaged, roads were closed and a plane was forced to return to Perth last night when a storm front hit the Goldfields.

SES volunteers were called out to two homes in Kambalda and one in Kalgoorlie-Boulder where residents had reported minor roof damage or flooding.

By midnight, when the Bureau of Meterology cancelled the severe thunderstorm warning for the area, there was 15mm of rain in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder gauge.

Virgin Australia flight VA1855 left Perth at 4.30pm and made it most of the way to Kalgoorlie-Boulder before turning back because of the storm.

It completed the flight later yesterday afternoon when the weather had cleared.

The Goldfields Highway remains closed at the Jubilee mine site turn-off.

There is a chance of thunderstorms forecast across parts of the Goldfields through to Monday.

Residents can report serious property damage to the SES on 130 500.
