Ambassadors peddle the benefits of cycling

Perth's glamour sports couple Mitch and Shae Brown are on a mission - to get West Australians of all ages and abilities on their bikes.

The pair have been named as Bikeweek ambassadors, charged with promoting the value and benefits of cycling across the community.

"We're both outdoor people and riding is such an easy and fun way to stay active and stay healthy," West Coast Fever netballer Shae said.

"And Perth is such a great place for riding," West Coast Eagles star Mitch said. "It's relatively easy, there's lots of connecting paths and it's healthy.

"A close mate of mine with a nine-to-five job lost 30-40kg simply by choosing to ride his bike to work. It had a big impact on his weight, without too much change to his schedule."

The Browns, who have recently launched their own active wear label Once Upon a Run, plan to attend many events during Bikeweek, which begins on March 14.

West Cycle chief executive Clint Shaw said ambassadors were appointed to promote cycling as a fun and easy way to get exercise and as a way to combat Perth's rising road congestion.

"Bikeweek is inclusive and targets everyday Western Australians - mums, dads, kids, community groups, cyclists, bike enthusiasts, seniors and advocates of lively and active lifestyles," Mr Shaw said.

"Bike riding is for everyone. It's not just about the lycra set."

AFL legend Barry Cable and Commonwealth Bank general manager Gary McGrath are also Bikeweek ambassadors.
