Ceiling collapse at Perth primary school

The Opposition has accused the State Government of failing to properly maintain a public school after part of a ceiling fell on two students.

A St John Ambulance spokesman said one child suffered minor injuries and was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital as a precaution.

The other child was medically cleared at the scene, he said.

Both are aged five.

Opposition deputy leader Roger Cook said Labor had called “for some time” for the roof at the school in Medina to be fixed.

“It was built in the 1950s, the roof is pock-marked, it is covered in lichen and moss and so on, it is a school in need of resources and repair,” he said.

“And it just seems to me that the government hasn't actually kept their eye on the ball in terms of the maintenance and ongoing upkeep of the school.

“This isn't good enough. This is a school in an established suburb in Perth. I mean, for heaven's sake.”

The pre-primary student had scratches after the incident, according to The Education Department.

The Department confirmed that part of the ceiling in the pre-primary classroom collapsed but it is not known what caused the incident.

Parents of the pre-primary students weree contacted.

Other children were moved another classroom.

Senior officials from the department were at the scene earlier today.
